New York State Freedom of Information Law says it should take 20 business days to get public records.
In Spring Valley, we're at 31 business days and counting.
That's how long village resident Anna Carafas has been waiting for information about a planned residential development a half mile from her home.
Carafas, 28, sought some answers when she filed a Freedom of Information request with help from The Journal News/lohud on April 5 — one of three Lower Hudson Valley citizens teaming up with the newspaper to test FOIL compliance in our area.
Carafas asked Spring Valley for tax and assessment information, and any correspondence relating to the target property on the corner of Union Road and Viola Road. It was a simple enough request, and the type of citizen inquiry that the law was intended to facilitate.....
