FOCUS ON: NY Appellate Court Judge Thomas Dickerson



Thomas A. Dickerson is a former Yonkers city councilman and city court judge is now a judge on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second Department. 

He was designated to this Division in 2006 and his term on the Supreme Court ends on December 31, 2017.

Controversy

Appellate Court Judge Thomas A. Dickerson, 72, a former Green Beret paratrooper in Vietnam who made an off-color joke from the bench in October 2014.

When a female attorney arguing in a motorcycle accident noted she had never ridden one, Dickerson said she would “look good in leather,” the legal-news site Above the Law reported.

He later apologized. “It blew a whole career,” the court insider said.

When judges turn 70, they can apply for certification to stay on the bench. They can apply for recertification at 72 and 74 but cannot serve past 76.

Education

Judge Dickerson received his B.A. degree from Colgate University in 1969, and his J.D. and M.B.A. degrees in 1973 from Cornell Law and Business Schools, respectively.

He served in the Army Special Forces as a Green Beret from 1963 to 1966, including service in Vietnam in 1956 and 1966.

He has also served in the New York Guard.

He is currently married and has two children

Career

Judge Dickerson began his legal career in 1974 as an associate attorney with the law firm Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler.

The following year, he joined the firm Shea & Gould.

From 1977 through 1993, he worked as a solo practitioner in the areas of consumer law, travel law, and consumer class actions.

During this time, from 1989 to 1993, he also worked as a Councilman of the City of Yonkers.

After this, he worked as a Yonkers City Court Judge from 1994 through 1999. From 2000 through 2002, he was a Westchester County Court Judge and an Acting Family Court Judge.

He became a Supreme Court Justice in 2003 and his 14 year term expires on December 31, 2017. He has served on the Appellate Division since 2006.
